The Council on Developmental Disabilities, Inc., a private non-profit parent association, was founded in 1952 by a small band of parents seeking educational services for their children with disabilities. The goal of these pioneer parents was to have a full array of services and programs to meet the unique and individual needs of their children. During the past six decades the Council has worked tirelessly to develop model programs and services and to turn those services over to appropriate community providers and to newly developing service providers. The Council’s major role has been and will continue to be supporting families and individuals with disabilities, providing information and resource materials for families, and to provide meaningful and accurate training for families. The Council advocates with and on behalf of children, youth, and adults with disabilities. The Council began as the Council for Retarded Children, later becoming the Council for Retarded Citizens, Council on Mental Retardation and now Council on Developmental Disabilities. Over the years The Council has expanded its outreach and services to include all children, youth, and adults with disabilities and their families. Since 1987, with the development of the Council’s assistive technology center (enTECH), Council constituents have included children and adults will all disabilities. This expanded outreach was reinforced in 2000 when the Council developed the FIND of Louisville program, which served families of all children with a broad range of disabilities.
The Council is committed to providing information, support, and training opportunities to all persons with disabilities and their families throughout the state of Kentucky.Get to know us!Defining Developmental Disabilities
Susan Lawrence Says Farewell
Dear Council Members and Friends,
Earlier this month I wrote an article in the Parent Outreach newsletter about the retirement of Susan Lawrence. In that article I described the beginning of our 32 year professional and personal relationship, noting her wonderful qualities of being a loving mother, a ferocious advocate, and a person with a gift for supporting and encouraging others. Susan has shared her leadership and creativity with the community and the thousands of families she has touched during her twenty years as Parent Outreach Director. She shared her most personal stories—the triumphs, the joys, and the losses. She used her own life experiences to help others through their darkest times and to share their most joyful moments. Although Susan will be retiring in December, she will be watching carefully as we move forward, gently encouraging us to always remember our mission to families. Yes, we will miss Susan, but we will never forget her wonderful work. We have been blessed by her presence and we celebrate her retirement. No one can speak more eloquently or honestly about commitment to families and to the Council than Susan.
So, in her own words…
